Texas Instruments acquires two Japanese chip factories from Fesso Semiconductor

Beijing time on July 16th news, according to foreign media reports, Texas Instruments (TI) announced the acquisition of Fesso Semiconductor's two chip factories in Japan. The US chipmaker will acquire factories and equipment from the company that has filed for bankruptcy.

Last year, Fesso Japan filed for bankruptcy protection as a result of the global economic downturn, and its parent company, Feso Semiconductor, filed for bankruptcy. Texas Instruments said that an 8-inch (200 mm) wafer fab will continue to operate, while another 12-inch (300 mm) chip manufacturing facility will be transferred to the Texas Instruments plant in Richardson, Texas.

In the statement, Texas Instruments said that the 12-inch factory will be used to meet future capacity needs. The company plans to retain most of the workers at the Aizuwakamatsu plant in Japan. Texas Instruments did not disclose the price of the acquisition of the two factories, but said the acquisition is a cost-saving way to increase the production of analog semiconductors in its main business. Texas Instruments' chips are widely used in a variety of devices such as e-readers, smart phones, robots and LED street lights.

This is the second time in the first year of the German instrument to buy bad assets. Last year, the company acquired equipment from a 12-inch wafer fab in the hands of Qimonda, a German DRAM chip maker that filed for bankruptcy. At the beginning of this year, Texas Instruments once again said that more equipment will be purchased from Qimonda.
